New Work
This body of work consists of abstract explorations of color and texture using hand-dyed and hand-woven linen paper yarn. The magic of these pieces resides in the dual process of their creation: a symbiosis of planning and chance, rigor and play, certainty and surprise. Weaving is a methodical practice that requires precise calculations, meticulous measurements and considerable patience. The woven structure that results is predetermined in the preparation. Dyeing the warp and the weft also involves careful calculations, but the results are only partially predictable. I use a low-immersion dyeing technique that allows me a certain degree of control, but ultimately the final outcome is left to chance. While I make the initial choices of what to put where, the hues shift and blend of their own accord. Adding further to the mystery, the colors that I see when applying the dyes bear little resemblance to what appears after the translucent paper yarn has been rinsed and dried. For me, the real adventure begins after the warp is on the loom. As I weave the weft through the warp, the colors interact to create a visual depth and chromatic harmony that couldn’t be achieved any other way.
